General facts
The Australian continent (called the fifth continent) is at the southern side of the earth between the Indian and the Pacific Ocean. The country Australia is divided into six States: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and West Australia.
Discovery
The First European discoverer in Australia was the Dutchman Willem Jansz. In 1642 the two Dutch Janszoon Tasman and Ide Holman explored the Australian west coast from south to north and discovered an island which they named after the governor of the Netherlands East India 'Van-Diemen-Land'. Today this island is called Tasmania. In 1644 the Dutch was convinced that Australia was a land without any worth so that they were not interested in the continent anymore. But they gave the continent the name New Holland.
The first Britain who saw Australia was pirate William Dampier who discovered the north-west of the continent in 1688. Later in
