On 4th October 1957 the whole world was surprised to hear the fact that the world's first satellite in the world, "Sputnik 1", had been launched by the Russians from Baikonur in Kazakhstan. It was as big as a football with four antennas. The only task it fulfilled was sending a radio signal to the earth. Just four weeks after this event the Soviet Union launched another satellite, with a dog inside. By this method they wanted to test whether living beings could survive in space. The dog survived in orbit, but just seven days. After those seven days there was not any air left and the dog died. Four months later the Americans brought their first satellite in orbit. They had already tried it but their rockets exploded. In the next years the United States and the Russians started many rockets for spying, weather watching, TV and telephone satellites and satellites for navigation on board of ships or planes.
