"A Streetcar Named Desire" von Tennessee Williams
1. Tell a friend who isn't acquainted with the play why Blanche spent a sleepless night (p 42, 1.11).
2. "Stella's eyes and lips have that almost narcotized tranquilitiy that is in the faces of Eastern idols." (p.42, 1.6, 7) Explain Stella's state of mind and give additional proof from scene 4.
3. Explain what Blanche means when she talks about "desire" with reference to Stella on the one hand and to herself on the other hand. Also take into consideration scene 1, p. 11, 1. 6 and scene 9, p.83, 1. 4.
4. Elia Kazan sums up scene 4 as follows: "Blanche, more desperate because more excluded, tries the direct attack and makes the enemy who will finish her."
