"A Couple of Hamburgers" by James Thurber
The pair is married, their relationship to each other is very bad, because they are very different, she is distinguished, he is simple. She would like to eat in fine restaurants, where he is satisfied with single frit stalls. She pays attention to odds and ends, which he ignores either, or it moves into ridiculous ones.
He seems very superficial, this shows smilingly itself though it that he overlooks decisive things, on which his wife makes him attentive, e.g. the noise in the car.
In connection with the drive lasting for hours these characters collide, this thereby appears that no tidy conversation is led all the time.
Reasons for it are, that he does not take her serious, however she is too serious and he reacts cynically.
