"A Time to Kill" by John Grisham

"A Time to Kill" was written by John Grisham and published in 1989 by Wynwood Press, London. The book consists of 515 pages which are divided into 44 chapters and an author's note. The story takes place in Clanton, Mississippi, USA and the action time amounts to two months.
The story's background: John Grisham had the idea to write the story in 1984 when he saw a young girl testifying in the courtroom against a man who had raped her. It took him three years to write the story (it was his first one), and when he was done nobody wanted to publish it except Wynwood. The book wasn't very successful at first, but after he had written his next novel, "The Firm", which was a big success, "A Time to Kill" was also sold a few millions times. Grisham himself says that the story contains quite a lot autobiographical information in the person of one of the major characters, Jake Brigance.
