The author and at the same time main character Frank McCourt, who published his book "Angela's Ashes" in 1996, is concerned in this book with his sad but also successfully childhood, he passed through.
The story is set in the time around the Second World War. He presents his childhood to the reader from the main characters point of view, which helps the reader to get involved in this book, the author's feelings and maybe to take side with him.
On the one hand it tells you a story full of sorrowfulness and suffering, but on the other hand it shows you how he as a boy managed to get out of all these problems with intelligence and cunning.
