Angela Davis

Angela Davis was born on January 26th, 1944 in segregated Birmingham/Alabama. Her parents were both teachers. She learned early about civil rights and political activism from her mother.
At the age of 15 she won a scholarship to a progressive school in New York. She was very good in French and so she began studying French literature in 1961. During her college she spent one year at Sorbonn in Paris and she also studied philosophy and socialism from 1965 to 1967.
In 1967 she became active in civil rights and militant black groups, the Black Panthers for exampl, and in 1968she became member of the communism party. Sha often gave speeches to support black prisoners. So she wanted to help the Soledad Brothers to get out of prison in 1969. The Soledad Brothers were African-American prisoners who were held in California's Soledad Prison in the late 1960s. Her speeches led in 1970 to a courtroom shoot out with guns she hab supplied. Five people were killed including one of the judges and one of the Soledad Brothers. Angela was suspected of kidnapping, murder and conspiracy. So she got on the FBI's most wanted list. When she was cought there was founded a 'Free Angela Campaign'. With the help of her lawyers and the campaign she was acquitted in 1972. She only spent 16 months in prison.
She married the photographer Hilton L. Braithwaide in 1980 and today she is professor at the University of California in Santa Cruz.
