First Settlements

Christoph Columbus was the first European in America. In the mid of the 16th century a colony named New France was found. The first settlers lived in houses made of lumber and they built fences to protect themselves. Life was hard and many settlers died of illnesses. French traders explored more of North-America and established some trade posts. Swedish and Dutch colonies were put up too. The Spains explored California and found New Mexico. In 1620 a ship named Mayflower sailed to America. The so called "Pilgrim Fathers", opponents to the English church, went to America on the Mayflower. They hoped to live better than in England. The pilgrim Fathers settled in Virginia. There the Native Americans helped them to survive. At the end of the 16th and 17th century many English, French and Dutch emigrated to North America. To get prosperity the colonists worked hard. They exported many different plants like tobacco, rice and cotton to Europe
