Biography

Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett was born Frances Eliza Hodgson on 24th November in 1849. The family lived in Manchester and Frances is one of five children that means that she had two brothers and two sisters. Her father was a well-to-do manufacturer but he died when Frances was a young child. After his death in the year 1853 the family fell upon hard times and in 1865 they emigrated to America. There Frances wrote some short stories which she sold to the Peterson's Magazine and the Lady's Books. So she got some money to help her mother.
In 1872 she received first success with the story "Surly Tim's Trouble", which was
published in Scribner's Magazine. Frances Eliza Hodgson married Dr Swan Burnett in 1873. She gave birth to two sons, the second named Vivian.
Frances and her husband travelled throughout Europe and after the travel they took up residence in Washington. She was not to forget
