Foundation
Peter Benenson, a British lawyer founded the organisation AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL in 1961. He had the idea to fight for the release of detainees, who were arrested because of their beliefs, politics, race, religion, colour or national origin. He called these people 'prisoners of conscience'. Benenson wanted to encourage people to write letters to the government officials in countries, which had prisoners of conscience.
AI was founded on the principle that all people have fundamental rights which don't make a difference between blacks and whites, Christians or Hindi. AI is based on the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
How they work
They investigate the cases of prisoners and when they determine that somebody is a prisoner of conscience they will tell many people to write to the officials in the prisoner's country to ask for his release. They try to release an individual
