1. Historical Background
1000 years before Christ the Celts came to the green Island and 500 years later the conversion of Ireland to Christianity was finished. In the 12th century English men came to Ireland and when King Henry VIII separated from the Roman Catholic Church he wanted the Irish to give up their religion and to become Protestants. There were many riots because the Irish didn't want to give up the Catholic Church. The English made many laws to suppress the Irish way of life and so they weren't allowed to trade with the colonies any more and their property was given to English Lords. So the Irish farmers had no rights. But that was not all: On the top of this fact there were so called penal laws that deprived the Irish of all political and economic rights.
